Treatments for athlete’s foot

The treatment for athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) requires antifungals creams, lotions, ointments or gels.

Generally loprox 1% cream is effective for these infections. If an athlete’s foot infection is associated with itchiness, redness and burning, a topical steroid cream (topicort) may be used in combination. In more persistent cases, your family doctor for healing may prescribe an oral antifungal.

For prevention of athlete’ foot, it is important dry well between your toes after a shower or bath, especially after visiting a public area. Lastly, socks made of natural fibers (cotton, wool) may help absorb humidity and thus control the environment that supports fungi. These must be changed at least once during the day.
